Nothing better epitomizes the disaster of the Bush Administration and the failure of checks and balances by Congress than the decision to wage war in Iraq. Over 2600 American soldiers and thousands more Iraqi civilians have lost their lives in this military misadventure that was rooted in exaggerations, fabrications and outright lies. The nation of Iraq lies in ruins, no weapons of mass destruction have been found and genuine democracy is an illusion as long as the Bush Administration props up a puppet government that has no real sovereignty. Meanwhile, war profiteering corporations with strong ties to the Bush Administration have made a killing off the war through no-bid contracts, fraudulent behavior and deceptive practices. Once again, history is repeating itself, but there appears to be no sign that the Bush Administration or the Republican majority in Congress is taking notice.

The false pretenses that underpinned this war along with the hatred the war has provoked throughout the world are the reasons why Louis Vandenberg opposed the war to begin with and currently opposes the ongoing occupation in Iraq. Congress failed in its constitutional oversight functions and gave the Bush Administration a free pass to wage a war that was unnecessary. The United States needs to immediately reevaluate its role in Iraq and find a solution that is supported by a global consensus and restores sovereignty of their nation to the people of Iraq.
