Economy The results of George W. Bush's economic initiatives speak for themselves—a 2.1 million net loss in jobs since taking office, stagnation of real wages and record profits for those at the very top. Of course, this is isn't that surprising given that Bush's much lauded tax cuts reduced taxes on inheritance, dividends and upper bracket incomes and did little for the middle and working class. And of course, these unprecedented tax cuts have yet to stimulate the economy in any significant way. As Louis Vandenberg argues, cutting taxes for the rich and then running record Federal deficits is unsustainable fiscal policy. Actually, it's more than unsustainable. It's a recipe for a fiscal disaster that will ultimately threaten social welfare programs including Social Security, Medicare and veterans' benefits that serve as a safety net for society. Instead, Louis proposes repealing the most egregious of these tax giveaways and using those revenues to balance the budget. After all, this is what President Bill Clinton did this in 1993 and the result was the longest peace time expansion of the economy in American history.
