Never before in American history has there been both a presidential administration and a Congress who have worked in lock step to undermine civil liberties in the manner in which the Bush Administration and the past two Congresses have done. The number of civil liberties that have been weakened is astounding: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, the right to due process, separation of church and state, reproductive rights…the list goes on. One need not be a card carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union to be concerned about the willingness of Congress and the Bush Administration to infringe upon the unalienable rights of all Americans.

Protecting the civil liberties of all Americans is the corner stone of Louis Vandenberg's campaign. Trading away freedom for the supposed comfort of “security” in the manner outlined in the USA Patriot Act is a dangerous precedent that must be reversed immediately. Moreover, the Bush Administration's efforts to infringe upon religious freedom in the form of “faith based” initiatives should be ceased. Finally, the move to limit reproductive rights by outlawing “partial birth abortion” must be countered.
